RENOWNED NEIGHBORHOOD: Other than being recognized by the Department of Interior, Bungalow Heaven was heavily-featured in books, newspapers, and magazines. Sunset named the community the Best Neighborhood in 2002. A few years after, in 2009, the American Planning Association recognized Bungalow Heaven as one of the ten great places in America. News of the community’s rising reputation, a Japanese Publication named Woody also featured Bungalow Heaven. The magazine describes it as “tree-canopied streets, quiet sidewalks, well-kept houses” in a “quiet, homey community where neighbors stand on front lawns to talk to each other.” The area is a real estate hotbed that built interest over the years where homes are in demand.

CLEAN AND GREEN: Bungalow Heaven is one of Pasadena’s most environmentally friendly neighborhoods. With its rigorous recycling and reuse habits, it strives for environmentalism at all costs. The community works to unify the energies of everyone who lives here in that effort. Not only does the neighborhood consist primarily of densely grown trees that give it a distinct aura, touching on something naturalistic. A vital part of this neighborhood is also its use of McDonald Park, which was once a water reservoir that’s now an outdoor oasis full of activity, from play to sports and other ways to entertain oneself outdoors. These amenities include plenty of greenery, from shady trees to flourishing plants bordering every sidewalk. The Bungalow Heaven Neighborhood Association also spends some money purchasing boxed saplings so that new trees can take root, as well as holding workshops on how best to care for street trees and planting edible gardens during droughts.

BUNGALOW INTERPRETATIONS: Bungalow Heaven has many different kinds of Bungalows. One type is reminiscent of an airplane and features a second story that looks like a cockpit. From the outside, it stands out for its three forward-oriented gables roofs, strong stucco pillars on the porch, and excellent paint job. An additional type of dwelling you’ll find is the Bungalow Line and Clinker Brick-Type homes. These were original one-level dwellings but soon enough had two stories added during an expansion project in 1915. This distinctive home was made into a duplex when developers finished off the upper level with generous eaves and great use of clinker brick, dense, misshapen bricks due to being exposed to high heat levels. Revival architecture is also prominent in many homes around the area. Reviva-designed homes have a lot of colonial revival features. Built as early as 1922, the exterior combines a cross-gable roof in craftsman design and an outside facade made from stuccoed walls and brick accents with little woodwork.
